Spearheading the CD music project is Singer/Songwriter Fabio Tolli (pictured above). "I just can't handle kids getting hurt" says Tolli. Each artist has generously donated their own original unplugged rock song for the project. The CD will be released in February 2008 in conjunction with the launch of a new child sexual abuse campaign - Speak Up, run by Australian-based charity Child Wise.
The SPEAK UP program aims to encourage Australians to speak up and report child sexual abuse. The campaign educates Australians on how to identify signs of abuse and abusers, teach people how to talk to children if they have concerns about child sexual abuse, and know who to speak to.
Bernadette McMenamin, CEO of Child Wise, says "Child sexual abuse is a hidden epidemic and our last taboo that we must expose. It is unacceptable that we as a nation stand by, while millions of our children (indigenous and non-indigenous) are being harmed in ways that will traumatise them often for the rest of their lives."
"No parent wants to consider that their child could be a victim of child sexual abuse. However, the statistics clearly show that millions of Australian children will become victims largely because we are ignorant about the signs of abuse and children are silent. Through education we can focus on prevention, protection and recovery."
"Music is a particularly appropriate way of highlighting the continuing problem of child abuse and child prostitution in Australia and abroad," adds Tolli. "It often provides sufferers a form of personal strength during unimaginably difficult and soul-destroying times. Music can be an outlet and so it's very important for many sufferers."
Child Wise is lobbying for the Federal Government to acknowledge the program and provide ongoing support to sustain this critical initiative, which will prevent millions of vulnerable children. With funding an ever present issue, fundraising can make a massive difference. Therefore buying the CD gives people the opportunity to register their protest against any form of child abuse and help the cause financially while also getting an album full of inspirational songs in return. Profits from sales will go directly towards the Speak Up campaign and Child Wise.
Child Wise is distributing hundreds of thousands of educational materials, an easy to read booklet, a website with details on where people can receive support, counseling and how to report abuse. Child Wise will have highly specialised child abuse counsellors available to provide telephone and online advice. The materials will be found in libraries, community centres and schools.
